Chapter XIV-AN ETERNAL PRAYER

Realizing one’s ephemeral existence in this world, a devotee in 1978, offered his eternal prayer at the holy feet of his atma guru, when our Saipadananda Sri Radhakrishna Swamiji was in his physical form moving with his devotees putting them on the right path of Guru Seva.

It was 1.30 p.m. when Sri Radhakrishna Swamiji arrived at the devotee’s house, nay His own house, from Cox Town while returning to Sri Sai Spiritual Centre. And sensing Swamiji’s urgency, this humble soul, merely chanting Baba ashtotra and holding firm His holy feet, pleaded “Om Guru-God of my soul, I appeal to Thee to keep this prayer in reserve to bless me during the last hour of my life as I am then, due to either worldly vasanas or purva karma, sure to falter to recite your name”.

Alas, this also proved to be his devotee’s last pada pooja to Swamiji, started by His grace and magnetic pull in 1971.

To get Swamiji’s blessings at the last hour of one’s life, a devotee has to set aside completely his mundane thoughts and ever swim in the enduring existence of Swamiji in himself, thus experiencing Advaita ananda of being one with Swamiji in everything the devotee does. This is considered to be the liberation of one’s soul from the moorings of the past vasanas and karmas.

This is also an experience of being one with the ultimate – our Sai and Swamiji – and not separate from the eternal being.

Bhaja Govindam 13th stanza says: “Oh! Distracted one! Why worry about wife, wealth, health, etc? Is not there for you the one who orders (rules, commands)? In the three worlds, it is the association with God-people alone, that can serve as a boat to cross the sea of change (birth and death).

The noose of desires except to become one with Swamiji and Sai Jyothi should be one’s last wish and this can come only when one thinks of his Guru, Saipadananda Sri RadhaKrishna Swamiji, at the last hour. This needs constant naamasmaran and this devotee had seen our Swamiji ever immersed in ‘Sai Ram’ smaran and this whisper which was ever on his lips could be distinctly heard while even Swamiji was coming from his kutir to the hall and also returning to his kutir.

SWAMIJI’S WORDS COME TRUE

One day, when this devotee entered the Sri Sai Spriritual Centre, he saw Swamiji returning to his kutir from the hall. He called this devotee half way and blessed him.

The devotee said “Swamiji, this atma in this body wishes to be ever with you here”. Swamiji replied “Time should come for everything. With a firm mind, whatever mode of devotion you have adopted, practice it well and you are sure to reach the goal.” Saying this, Swamiji patted the devotee and went to his kutir.

In 1973, a trip, with Swamiji’s consent, to go to Palni was arranged. But suddenly the trip was cancelled and Swamiji sent word through a devotee that on the fixed day there would be thunderstorm in the hills and it would be difficult to negotiate the steps and, therefore, tell Natarajan to cancel the trip.

Anyhow, Swamiji summoned the devotee, his wife and sister-in-law to his room at 10 a.m. When they went there, Swamiji revealed the real reason for putting off the trip. Later, the reason, given by Swamiji through Baba’s grace, proved to be true by the happenings in Kathirkamam, a great Muruga Kshetra in Sri Lanka those days.

Even when the devotee visited Palni after swamiji’s Mahasamadhi in 1980, His premonition of gale and storm came true. One day, we came to Palni in the evening and with the company of local acquaintances, we reached the uphill for the evening arati of Palni Andavar. When the darshan was over, we started descending the hill. The devotee and his son preferred coming via the sloppy way (called Aanai Adi Pathai – through which elephants are taken uphill).

The devotee’s wife and daughter started descending the regular steps. Suddenly, a thunderstorm with high velocity winds, started lashing the hills. Before the devotee and his son could reach the first mantap downhill, the storm was severe and they were stranded in the mantap, while his wife and daughter drenching in the rain and with the support of the local devotees had reached the last mantap downhill and they were worried about our safety and the local people were putting courage in their minds not to be worried over.

While everyone had left the place, only the devotee and his son were aloof in the first mantap and the devotee sought Swamiji’s help, believe it or not, a temple security guard, after finishing his duty as returning downhill, came to the devotee’s rescue and safely brought them downhill and made them join their relatives. The local devotees took us safely to the lodge and gave us courage to face the situation. And thus Swamiji’s words proved true.

In 1974, we were to leave for Kasi for offering Bhiksha vandan to the 69th Pontiff of Kanchi Kamakoti Peetam, Sri Jayendra Saraswathi. We sought Swamiji’s blessings before leaving Bangalore. Swamiji said “I will always be with you. Yet, be careful while taking bath in the Ganges. You will have Palni Andavar darshan in Kasi.” We were wonderstruck how Lord Muruga, was going to give us darshan in Kasi, as this second son of Lord Shiva, was less known in north. And yet it comes true.

On the appointed day, Bhiksha vandan went on well and that night Swamiji’s words of Lord Muruga’s darshan were ringing in the devotee’s mind.

Surprisingly, the next day, we were invited to see the abhisheka to Palni Andavar in the next room and we could not believe it for a second. One Vedic Scholar, Subramani Sastrigal of Kanchi Mutt, camping in our next room, was doing abhisehka to the idol of Palni Andavar, given to him by Sri Chandrasekhandra Saraswathi, 68th Pontiff of Kanchi Mutt. That way we were pleased to participate in the pooja ans Swamiji proved his words.

The purvashrama name of Sri Chandrasekhandra is Swaminathan and so.
Swaminatha Devase Sainatha mam Phake Sainatha Devase Subramanya mam phake.
